The Problem
When I lost my job managing an e-commerce business in June 2022, I decided to pivot and take a year to focus on entrepreneurship and starting a photography business. Photography and entrepreneurship weren't new to me, but I was behind with the latest technologies and having a streamlined workflow in order to maximize profits. Building up a client base was also going to take time, but I was in it for the long haul, and I knew Taskrabbit would be a great way to gain clients.
The Solution
While waiting for photo clients to roll in, I decided to branch out and offer services such as organization and computer help related to both hardware and software. After a couple of years cooped up after COVID and working remotely, it was refreshing to be face-to-face with clients. Helping people proved to be very rewarding, so I stayed the course.
The Results
Remarkably, I worked my way to becoming a full-time Elite Photographer in New York City, and now have a streamlined workflow utilizing AI software and a portfolio with great reviews to show for it.
How does this translate to UX design?
In most cases, my work requires me to problem-solve on the spot. Things don't always go according to plan and it's my job to come up with creative solutions while offering guidance, reassurance and support.
A lot of my work requires me to be inside clients' homes or offices, and sometimes they are under an immense amount of pressure. It's my job to stay cool and collected in order to make them feel calm and secure, especially when they are being photographed on one of the most important days of their lives!
Building relationships and trust comes easy when coupled with an innate curiosity about people. To offer the best service, I have to read a room, read people well, and read between the lines of what they say and what they really mean.
